Joe Nahas is from Frackville, a little town in Pennsylvania. His passion for baseball began here when he was a boy, and he demonstrated a natural talent from a very early age. But in small town America, lots of kids demonstrate natural talent. Joe Nahas stood out through his commitment and work ethic. He spent many hours of his free time practising and developing his skills, polishing his technique, and learning the game.
Joe’s hard work paid off when he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Maryland (UMBC). Here he continued to excel, both in his academic program and on the baseball field. He transferred to Chesapeake College for his sophomore year and here he quickly rose to a key player in the team, impressing the fans with his athleticism, tactics, and focus. Nahas was integral to the Skipjacks win in the 2018 Maryland Junior College State Championship. His contribution was rewarded when he was named to the First Team All-Maryland JuCo Conference. It was during this year he came to the attention and his outstanding of professional scouts, who saw his potential and the following year saw him line up for Georgia Southern, a D1 school.
Like many college baseball players, Joe Nahas aspired to a professional career. Initially he was not drafted, and he moved on to play with Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod League. While facing stiff competition and new challenges, Nahas maintained his work ethic and continued to aspire to making it to the big leagues. This paid off in 2019 when, on the very last day of player signings, he was selected by the Cubs.
His initial success included striking out three hitters in one inning, but he couldn’t find consistency, and this led to a transfer to Eugene.
While many would have given up, Joe Nahas continued to work at his dream, consistently improving his stats and gaining fans at a lot of the clubs he subsequently played for.
From the view of this fan in Sydney, Joe Nahas is a great example of leadership, sportsmanship, and friendship. When he has served a team captain, he has led by example and motivating his teammates and helping them to get to their best performances. On and off the field, Joe’s conduct shows a passion for the game of baseball and a respect for both his teammates and his rivals. He often gives his time to charitable causes, especially those that have connections to baseball, and he uses his position to influence and inspire young athletes. He regularly returns to his hometown to run pitching clinics. His attitude and actions make him a fan favourite and he is a good example for anyone who aspires to play sport at a higher level.
